Sekulic Specializes In New Lawn Installation
We most often install new lawns for new construction homes and for existing lawns that are beyond saving with turf management techniques like aeration, weed control & fertilizer. There are challenges to address with installing a quality lawn in each situation, but the installation process is similar in either case. A quality lawn is built on a great base! Lawns grow best in good top soil that is properly prepared with rocks removed.
Lawn installation for newly built homes is fairly straightforward. The amount of work depends on what the contractor did to finish grade the lawn area. Finish grading is important that it’s done well to address water drainage and hills that may be too steep to mow, for example. Our first step is to make sure the lawn is graded well. Then we look at the top soil conditions and evaluate if we need to bring more in. We usually remove any surface rocks with a rockhound. This process also prepares the seed bed to install quality grass seed and starter fertilizer. We finish with straw to cover the seed and hold in moisture. Hydroseeding is an option if you prefer it over grass seed and straw. It has certain advantages that we like.
Existing lawns are similar to the above process except our first step is removing the old turf. We generally rough grade the lawn to prepare it for finish grading. From here the lawn installation process is basically the same as for a new construction lawn. We almost always need to add top soil to improve soil conditions and to thicken up the top soil layer.
